April Update
With the new season upon us and finally some tennis good weather we wanted to give you a few news updates…
Tennis Open Day
We held an Open Day at the weekend with the aim of encouraging new members to the club. The fabulous weather no doubt helped to boost numbers and it was a very busy afternoon. Around 40 juniors turned up and took advantage of some free coaching sessions. A good number of adults also came along and enjoyed a hit with some members.
All in all it was a very successful afternoon and we expect to gain some new adult and junior members. It was good to hear the newcomers say what a friendly and active club we have.
A big thank you to Mary for her organisation and promotion of the event. To Raji, Lynne, Rosemary and Jim for doing the admin and meet & greet. To Andy, Kevin and Pauline for making people welcome on court; Keith for all his efforts with the juniors, and of course the rest of the coaching team – Duncan and Roger, with help from Anda.
Do look out for any newcomers at forthcoming social sessions and please make them feel welcome.
Charity of the Year
The committee voted for the Woking & Sam Beare Hospice as our charity of the year. It is a local patient-led charity that delivers specialist palliative care to people who have advanced life-limiting conditions, as well as supporting their carers and families.
Proceeds from all out social events and day tournaments will be donated to this excellent cause at the end of the year.
Quiz Night
Friday night saw the first of the year’s social events: the well established and ever popular Quiz Night. The lovely weather had a slight impact on numbers but we still had 8 teams battling away in a series of mixed rounds on the themes of music, TV and film.
As always the night got noisier as things progressed and compere Keith L did a sterling job in maintaining order!
It was a tight competition but ultimately the ‘Chips Ahoy’ team came out on top and collected their prizes of bottles of wine. The team included club members Martin & Dan Godbold, Stuart French and Frank Clark, plus partners.
A good time was had by all and £110 was raised for charity.
Thanks to organisers Keith & Kevin, and a special mention to Ben behind the bar who single-handedly kept the drinks flowing all evening!
